Our Mission

Let’s be real here: when kids and teens learn about how harmful substances can affect their bodies, not only now but for the rest of their lives, it opens up doors to further conversation and lowers their risks of ever using in the first place.

The Council of Prevention has been servicing Warren and Washington county schools since 1978. Here at the council we believe that when we foster our communities and collaborate with other agencies that service them, we can help to bring awareness, growth, and healing to them as well. With our combined expertise and experience in both schools and communities we are a polished and professional team of educators, activists, and a support system.

So, how do we do this?

The council provides many programs and services to the schools and communities at large to prevent and help those who are in recovery! We provide many evidence based programs that have been proven to aid in both of these areas! The best part is that they are low cost or sometimes even free!

It is as simple as giving us a call or sending an email to find out more about what programs may be a great fit for your event, training, or school district. We are here to help you narrow down options or you can browse our catalog. We can’t wait to be with you along this journey!

OUR HISTORY

The Council for Prevention Inc. was originally established as two councils, one for Warren County and one for Washington County. Warren County took the lead by incorporating on January 18, 1978 and received funding from the Division of Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse for a core staff of an executive director and secretary in June 1979. Washington County Council on Alcoholism incorporated on September 10, 1979, but struggled with low membership until it merged with Warren County in 1985, forming the Warren/Washington Counties Council on Alcoholism.

Much of the day-to-day work was still done by Board members with a small staff, as was often the case with grassroots organizations. The Council added the Substance Abuse certification in 1988. Then the corporate name was changed to the Council for Prevention of Alcohol and Substance Abuse, Inc. in 1998 to reflect the prevention focus of the agency.

In July 2013, the Corporate Name was changed again to Council for Prevention, Inc. to more adequately reflect its expanded Mission. The council has programming for prevention of alcohol, marijuana, nicotine, illicit substances, and suicide.

The majority of the agency’s funding continues to come from the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS), the result of combining the Department of Substance Abuse Services (DSAS) and the Division of Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse (DAAA).
